Fatty thighs to give breasts a lift

Nearer and nearer to thee - utopia may be at hand for the female body. At press time, under development are methods of breast enlargements that aim to transplant fat from women’s hips, “love handles” and thighs on to their busts.

This is every way one for the ultimate sculpting records, in that surgeon can redistribute fat around women’s bodies to their liking. American women have already submitted to the operations by the dozens, the British not too far behind.

If perfected, the procedure is seen to stymie the demand for silicon implants. Silicon implants must be replaced every 10 years and very much prone to infection-causing scarring. In contrast, women would opt to have material closer to organic.

Breast augmentation by fat transplant looks more natural compared to implants, which can become very hard. Since a smaller volume of fat is needed, the technique best suits women wanting a modest breast enlargement of about one to one and a half cup sizes.

The Harley Medical Group is gearing up to offer the procedure, “once scientific clinical trials have taken place and they are peer-reviewed in established medical publications…something that would be of great interest.”

The basic principle behind the procedure is the method called fat grafting. It removes fatty tissues from the patient’s own body to re-implant it where needed. The most likely areas to extract fats are body parts like the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks.

By now, fat grafting has widely been applied for plumping certain facial features. Fat from so-called donor sites on a patient’s own body is administered to the facial areas of choice. Done so, the patient may see improvements on the creased and sunken areas of the face, even a pronounced fullness to the lips and cheeks. These injectable fillers may be used alone or simultaneously with a resurfacing procedure or a recontouring procedure, such as a laser treatment or a facelift, respectively.

C'mon folks. Surgeons have been trying for over a century to use natural fat as a breast implant material. And I'll admit there have been some advances in recent years, especially with stem cell technology. But in terms of patient safety and cosmetic results, the fact is that in 2008, breast implants are still the way to go without a doubt. This is exactly what our clients tell their patients who want breast augmentation in Michigan, Florida, California, or wherever, and frankly, when it comes to your safety, this is something you should trust the experts on.

Sure, at first blush fat grafting sounds like the holy grail. But hold off on those red cheeks - taking fat from your butt isn't all it's cracked up to be. I work with a plastic surgeon who offers breast augmentation in Chicago, and I have to stand by the safety and durability of modern breast implants. Fat grafting may be popular in other parts of the world, but if it was really so effective and satisfying, why aren't more surgeons offering it in the United States? My guess is that all the press is too good to be true and there are more problems than American doctors would like.
