Iraqi girl’s reconstructive nose surgery

Plastic surgeons of the UCLA Medical Center did an amazing job for a 12-year old Iraqi girl named Marwa Naim. They gave the girl a reconstructive nose surgery for free. The deed was great considering that the operation would have cost the girl 12,000 US dollars, which of course, the girl could never afford to pay.
Frankly, the girl really needed such help and more. Her life was pretty much devastated. It was not only a chunk of her nose that she lost during a missile attack in Baghdad in 2003. She also lost her mother. That alone is proof of the terrible misfortune she has suffered. The reconstructive surgery was the least we could do to somehow salvage any hope that has been left of the girl.
Naim’s case was quite complicated to handle. This is not the usual nasal reshaping surgery to begin with. A news story concerning the reconstructive procedure mentioned that doctors had to remove a rectangular skin flap from Naim’s forehead and rotated it 180 degrees to fashion a new nose. But that was not the end of it. The surgeons needed to extract cartilage from Naim’s ear and put it on the nasal tip to give it a shape.
The bandages were already removed earlier this month. And Naim is very grateful about the whole thing. Her deformity did not really cause her breathing problems or anything but the plastic surgeons opted to do the surgery to spare Naim from ridicule and shame.
Indeed, plastic surgery has once again manifested that it can patch up some of life’s holes, and brings about a changed life and a hopeful perspective, especially to folks like Marwa Naim.
More of these inspiring stories, please.
