Through the centuries, it has been believed that’s a well-defined jaw is a major indicator of a man’s masculinity. Up to this very day, a man with a “strong jaw” is seen as more masculine than those who have “weak jaws”. And Hollywood doesn’t help the cause of weak-jawed men all over the world, as its most manly men, at least in image, more often than not have really strong jaw lines. Can you imagine guys like Russell Crowe, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio and George Clooney appearing heroic in their films if they had the rounded, chubby, and weak-jawed face of, say, Paul Giamatti? Although Giamatti is one hell of an actor and is a leading man in his own right, he does not fit the general idea of a typical Hollywood leading man: a man with a prominent jaw line.
Truth to tell, many men look more like the Sideways star than any of the leading men mentioned above. While there’s nothing really wrong with a weak jaw line, some men would rather have a more defined jaw line to appear more masculine. Luckily for them, a cosmetic surgery procedure called jaw augmentation is now being offered by plastic surgeons to address this particular need.
Jaw augmentation is basically the insertion of an implant to make the mandible structure of the face more defined or prominent. Synthetic or biological materials are used for the jaw implants, which are designed not only to give less defined faces more balance, but also to further enhance an existing jaw structure.
It is common among jaw augmentation patients to also go for cheek implants, as well as chin augmentation, or mentoplasty. The reason for this is the fact that combined with any of these procedures, a jaw augmentation balances out a patient’s facial features, further enhancing the face.
However, not everybody is qualified to undergo jaw augmentation. As is the case in any cosmetic surgical procedure, a patient must be in generally good health. And in going under the knife, the patient must have realistic expectations about the results. This is why it is extremely important for you to effectively communicate your desired results with a qualified plastic surgeon so you could both come up with a plan that would produce realistically achievable results.
It is also critical that a prospective patient should not be suffering from any bone disorders. Those who have been using Accutane, a drug used to treat nodular acne, for the last six months are not advised to undergo jaw augmentation. This is because Accutane causes hyperostosis, or excessive bone growth. The acne medicine can also cause excessive scarring in some patients.
Usually, a jaw augmentation procedure takes approximately one to two hours, depending on the extent of the augmentation as well as the technique or material used. The plastic surgeon makes internal incisions on either side of the lower lip. This is to allow the surgeon to create a pocket into which the jaw implant can be inserted. Through the course of the surgery, this implant can be removed or further customized several times to ensure that it would look suitable for the patient's facial features. The implant will then be sutured or screwed in place. To close the incisions, dissolving sutures are often used.
After getting jaw implants, the patient often experiences significant swelling which usually peaks within 24 to 48 hours. It also takes several days for such swelling to subside. However, the final results of your surgery may not be really apparent for the next few months due to the occurrence of prolonged mild swelling.
Obviously, someone who has just had jaw implants will have a limited ability to smile, talk or move their mouths for several days. Diet and activities will also be restricted. In some cases, complications could arise. This is why it is absolutely essential for the patient and the plastic surgeon to see eye to eye on matters pertaining to the surgery, and that the patient should be ready for any eventualities that may arise. Jaw augmentation, just like any other plastic surgery procedure, carries with it a certain amount of risk.
