New discovery in manipulating fat may revolutionize cosmetic surgery

It looks like researchers and surgeons have found a natural way to get rid of pesky crow’s feet and get rid of unwanted fat in the thigh and abdominal areas.

A recent study that is published online in the July 1 issue of Nature Medicine says that physicians have been able to selectively add fat in targeted areas of the body in laboratory animals by injecting a natural chemical found in the body. Furthermore, they also found out that blocking this chemical can prevent the development of fat.

The study is partially funded by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) National Endowment for Plastic Surgery. Further evaluation is needed in order to have this study tested on humans. If the results of the study will prove to be highly reliable, this could revolutionize aspects of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery according to the ASPS.

Stephen Baker, MD, DDS, ASPS Member Surgeon and study co-author said that this is the first well-described mechanism found that can effectively eliminate fat, rejuvenate the face, or re-contour the body without surgery.

"Unlike current methods, this natural chemical could prove to induce a person's own body to remove or add fat. We are very excited about the animal findings, however; we know more research is needed and predict that studies in humans may not begin for another two years."

With this new development in fat removal, patients can now say goodbye to saddle bags, and will be enjoying results similar to liposuction without the surgery by using the chemical to block the pathways that make cells create fat. Also, this discovery could finally deliver the promises made by mesotherapy and LipoDissolve – two of the most popular procedures that are considered to non-surgically remove localized fat.

  • "Manipulating" More Than Fat

The only thing that's getting manipulated here is the hopes of women and men who want to slim their appearance. If there was some "natural" chemical that destroyed fat cells, wouldn't it be on the market by now? Like most people, for now I would stick with a New Jersey liposuction procedure from a board-certified plastic surgeon rather than risk the disappointment of lackluster or nonexistent results. Lipo has been around for almost 50 years and has helped millions of people worldwide successfully enhance their body contour.

You Say You Want a Revolution...

I'm a little skeptical. There seem to be so many lipo options out there these days, and while almost all of them are less invasive than the traditional procedure, from what I've seen there's still no substitute. I work with a group of cosmetic surgeons in Northern California who offer liposuction in Sacramento and Roseville. By using proven innovations to enhance comfort and speed recovery, plastic surgeons can achieve dramatic positive results with the standard liposuction methods.

    Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recently released its 2007 National Plastic Surgery Statistics. Not surprisingly, with 301,882 procedures performed last year, liposuction was the second most popular plastic surgery procedure performed in the United States, just behind breast augmentation. I'm not a doctor, but I'm proud to work with three board certified plastic surgeons who specialize in liposuction in Atlanta. While this new development you discuss here sounds pretty good, today's methods for eliminating problem fat in health patients (liposuction, lipodissolve) are already pretty darn good. So, while there will certainly be advances made in the future, we obviously live in the present. And, personally, I'd rather look my best now.
