Plastic surgery and the Stars

The LA Times made a list of some Hollywood stars who are either open about their plastic surgery endeavors or silent about that particular part of their lives but haunted by rumors due to the telltale signs of plastic surgery on their faces.

First on the list is Priscilla Presley. Well, one look at Presley’s face will make you ask a lot of questions. One of them perhaps would be “Why the heck did she ruin her face?” Presley had one of the most beautiful faces really but now, she looks very different in a bad way.

According to People magazine, the "Dancing with the Stars" contestant was treated by an unlicensed surgeon and somehow destroyed her looks. She is now planning to undergo more surgery to correct it.

Second is Dolly Parton. Everybody knows Dolly has had work done. And she is open about it. Though she looks ‘plastic’ and doll-like, she makes it appear that her cosmetic work has worked so well for her.

Ashley Tisdale is also included in the list. She supposedly went through a "deviated septum repair" which others considered as a nose job. Next up is Teri Hatcher who has both admitted and denied she used Botox.

The last three entries are somehow known to have had work done. Carrie Fisher, without her saying a word, we know what made her face look so different. The same goes to Melanie Griffith. Like, do we even have to ask? And of course, who could ever miss out Joan Rivers?! She has talked about her surgery so many times over the years that it's part of her IMDB listing. Enough said.

Here's not-so-secret secret. I would put good money on the fact that if you live in anywhere near a big city, pretty much every day you're meeting people who have had cosmetic surgery. They're your neighbors, coworkers, and even friends. This isn't a news flash, but plastic surgery has reached the masses. Now don't get me wrong, it's not like celebrities are booking surgery with cosmetic surgeons in Glens Falls, NY or Fargo, ND. But plenty of people in these local communities are. The constant debate about who is and who isn't seems so childish to me. With nearly 2 million cosmetic procedure performed each year, maybe the question should be, "who hasn't had plastic surgery?"

    what about male celebrities?

male plastic surgery is on the rise across the world, so although priscilla, dolly, ashley, teri, carrie and joan are mentioned here, there are also quite a few male celebrities that either have had or are rumored to have had plastic surgery (i write and conduct research for a doc who performs cosmetic surgery on Long Island, and honestly, unless it's really, really obvious, it can be difficult to say for sure who's had plastic surgery). anyway, here are a few men that appear to have had some work done, for good or bad...

good: simon cowell (botox), hugh hefner (neck lift)

bad: carrot top (???), mickey rourke (facelift)

i agree w/mike's recommendations, but i would add that if you're considering ps, that you keep in mind that taking 5 or 10 years off your appearance is more realistic than hoping to take off 20 or 30.

    Three great examples

As someone who's worked with several plastic surgeons, including three here in Atlanta, plastic surgery can be bad (Priscilla) when performed by an unqualified "doctor" and good (Dolly). And, as you point out with Ashley, plastic surgery isn't always used to enhance ones appearance. Rather, it's sometimes used to correct a defect. The key thing to increase the odds of enjoying good results, I think (and I 'm not a doctor), is to make sure you:
    1. Know yourself. Know why you want plastic surgery.
    2. Know your procedure. There's a lot of information out there.
    3. Know your surgeon. Make sure they're board certified.
How anyone, let alone someone like Priscilla who's demonstrated a lot of good business sense in managing Elvis' estate, would ever elect a medical procedure without checking the background of their "doctor" is just plain crazy to me.
