Plastic Surgery For Migraines?

Here’s good news for migraine sufferers, although this “good news” may not be exactly what you’d expect.

According to a report from PakTribune.com, a facial plastic surgery technique called a forehead rejuvenation procedure has the unexpected—but most definitely welcome—side effect of relieving and/or eliminating migraine attacks. The news article was based on a report that was published in the January issue of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery journal.

Patients undergoing the plastic surgery technique, which involves cutting muscle in the forehead, reported that their migraine headaches disappeared, writes researcher Bahman Guyuron, MD, professor of plastic surgery with Case Western Reserve University and the American Migraine Center.

In his study, the aforementioned doctor made use of 125 migraine sufferers as test subjects, with one group of 100 getting surgery and a group of the remaining 25 getting no treatment at all.

And the results are indeed promising.

92% of patients had at least a 50% reduction in migraine frequency, duration, or intensity. Of that group, 35% reported elimination of migraine headaches and 57% reported improvement. Only 15% of comparison patients reported good results during the one-year follow-up.

The technique, however promising it may be, hasn’t been perfected yet to be considered a “cure” for migraines. It still needs further testing before it can be marketed as such. But it gives countless migraine sufferers the world over hope that they could still do something about such a debilitating condition.
