Plastic surgery procedures available in your local malls

Well, there is another plastic surgery craze going on in Dallas as of the meantime. It seems that plastic surgery has gotten so popular that people who want to make cosmetic surgery services available to more people have come up with an idea that would surely ring the alarm bells of some plastic surgery enthusiasts.

News has it that plastic surgery makeovers will soon to be available at your local malls! Okay, isn’t this supposed to be shocking? I don’t know about you but I can see raised eyebrows among plastic surgeons who are very particular with giving quality plastic surgery services to patients.

Contra Costa Times has this to say:

Dr. Richard D'Amico, president-elect of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, said the concern is more about safety than location. He said that it's important that such procedures are at least overseen by a plastic surgeon or a dermatologist.

The procedures may look like simple injections, but serious complications could result if someone isn't properly trained. For example, an injection that paralyzes the muscle, like Botox, given in the wrong spot could cause an eyelid to droop, he said.

Despite the accessibility of mall-based medical spas, those who run them say they screen patients to make sure they understand the procedure and determine whether it's appropriate for them.

"We don't want impulse buyers. We take a careful history -- talk about pros and cons," said Dr. Jeff Kenkel, professor and vice chairman of the department of plastic surgery at UT Southwestern, who oversees the NorthPark spa along with Rohrich. "We want to make sure that that person is educated about what they're looking for."

Well as long as there are qualified physicians around to man the whole thing, I guess it is safe for patients to get their makeovers done in their favourite malls. But then again, they should exercise proper caution. When it doesn’t feel right, they must leave at once. Only those who are sold out to undergo the procedures should be the ones given. Those who are in doubt should never be forced.

  • The Mall's Not Even a Place for Med Spa

I totally get the outrage about surgery in a mall setting. But there have been hair salons in malls for decades and increasingly I've noticed these places offering "spa" procedures. Call me old fashioned, but when I'm ready to have BOTOX near my Long Island home, I'll go to a physician-supervised professional spa where safety and excellent results are the priority. If I need shoes or a gift certificate to Hot Topic for my niece, maybe I'll go to the mall, but cosmetic procedures? No way.

    Am i a snob?

Am I? Just because i don't want my taxes done at the mall? Or, my blood pressure checked in some chair kid was just jumping around in and kicking? Malls are where teenagers go to hang-out, and rejects from the police academy go to hassle the kids. I work with a surgeon who specializes in Schenectady cosmetic surgeon, and he's got a real office and everything! Seriously, malls employ seasonal help, and i don't want seasonal help, even if they've rec'd a bit of basic training, injecting me with anything.

    The Mall?

I know plastic surgery is elective, but it's still surgery. And just because something has "spa" attached to it (like med spa), "med" is still short for "medical." Frankly, I don't trust the food in the "food court" of a mall, let alone desire discount medical procedures being performed on me. If you're considering a procedure or treatment, get the facts first. Know all you can about the procedure or treatment. Know all you can about the person performing it. I work with a plastic surgeon who specializes in Long Beach breast augmentation. His site is a great source for information on popular plastic surgery procedures and medical spa treatments. Even if you don't live in Southern California, it's worth a visit to his site prior to visiting the mall.
