The field of plastic surgery has been mulling on this idea, as this is not-so-recent development really. But the curious among us could have missed the news about one quite unusual plastic surgery technique – as practically majority, if not all surgical procedures require some semblance of a bed. This time a patient may be asked to stand up and deliver…excess fat, that is.

With liposuction, being awake during an operation is nothing new, but to be awake and standing up while being suctioned is another thing.

Well, you may just find yourself in that kind of situation when New York plastic surgeon Leonard Grossman, M.D. is your attending cosmetic surgeon. Dr. Grossman has used this technique with great success for nearly a decade on patients requiring liposuction of the saddlebag area and the hips.

Dr. Grossman explains that those areas of the body tend to shift in shape when a patient is in the horizontal position, distorting the figure; and that makes it more difficult for a doctor to determine if the outcome will be what the patient wants, the doctor added.

However, Dr. Grosman cautioned that this innovative procedure is ideal only to those who need to lose small volumes of fat – certainly not for everyone. He added that the whole standing liposuction procedure can take ten minutes more than regular liposuction but the same recovery time.

If a patient can tell exactly whether she wants more fat removed for an even slimmer look -- that’s neat, possibly lessening the number of dissatisfied patients. To avoid having patients disappointed with the results of a plastic surgery, some cosmetic surgeons are now asking that patients interact with them during the procedure. Indeed, according to Dr. Grossman, the re-operation rate on stand-up liposuction is nearly nil.

“It's just a logical procedure if you think about it,” said the Chairman of Plastic Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center, Dr. Stephen Colen.

A recent patient was quoted as saying, “I really thought that I was going to be a little more freaked out…I could see what was being done while it was being done.” After the standing liposuction conducted on her, she exclaimed, “I thought it was great!”.
