Stop the Tease; Hear the Praise

The teasing and the nasty looks must stop. Fortunately, the problem of exceptionally large ears or those that stick out can be corrected through corrective surgery, called otoplasty. Now more importantly one can gain an improved appearance and more self-confidence.

One would know that the ears have reached full size when he or she is five or six years old. It is when odd-looking ears are ready for corrective ear surgery. One can opt to have his or her surgery at any age but having the surgery at a young age has two advantages: the cartilage is more pliable, making it easier to reshape, and the child will experience the psychological benefits of the cosmetic improvement.

Ear plastic surgery corrects various ear deformities. “Lop-ear” - the absence of the “fold” of hard, raised cartilage that gives shape to the upper portion of the ear - which is inherited, can cause the ear to stick out or flop down. Ears which stick out more than 4/5 of an inch (2 cm) from the back of the head are “pinned back”. In addition to correcting protrusion, ears may also be reduced in size, reshaped or made more symmetrical.

What new ear?...hear this: Rib cartilage or a biomedical implant, in addition to the patient's own soft tissue, can be used to construct a new ear. Alternatively, those who are born without an ear, or lose an ear due to injury, can have an artificial, custom formed ear surgically attached for aesthetic reasons,

All ear plastic surgery procedures do not in any way alter the patient's hearing. And so, after recovering, all the praises for “a new you” are loud and clear.

  • Now Ear This!

I had a friend back in grade school that hated his ears; they weren't "bigger" than my ears or those of our friends... they just stuck out further. Like most kids (and some adults), he grew his hair out long to cover them, and wore hats to hide them. This "look" was okay for the time period. He was my friend, so I never thought about his ears much, although I'll admit I was pretty thankful that my ears were okay (I had my own problems, of course, mainly with my teeth). Anyway, back then, while most of us had problems with our teeth, most of us also had some way to correct them... not the case with my friend's ears (at least, not as far as I knew way back then). Today, I know different, because I work with a bunch of plastic surgeons across the country, and although I'm not a doctor, I've seen the difference they've made in the lives of people living with large ears. Right now, I'm working with Hawaii plastic surgeon who performs ear pin back surgery (otoplasty). Simply put, so many surgeries require that one reach a certain age (usually late teens), but not the case with ear surgery. In fact, although any one pretty much of any age can have the procedure, like this post says, our ears are fully grown by around 4 or 5, so it's usually okay to go ahead an correct an imperfections. Doing so, typically involves making a small incision at the back of the ear for the ps to shape cartilage and/or sometimes remove some skin. In most instances, the procedure only take 2 to 3 hours... not very long to save a child a lot of suffering.
