UK Teen Cosmetic Surgery

Statistics coming from three of the largest cosmetic surgery chains in United Kingdom reveals that almost 600 teenagers underwent breast augmentation last year. Transform, one of the largest chains of cosmetic surgery clinics in the U.K. reported a five-fold increase in the last few years.

However, though the number is quite impressive, Lorraine Ishak, clinical director of Transform said that the figure would have been larger if the surgeons were not wise enough to reject several requests.

"You have to assess someone in two categories: first, their physical maturity. Have their bodies stopped growing? And the second category: Are they emotionally mature? We turn down about 50 percent of 18- and 19-year-olds, and it's mostly because during the consultation process … we see that [the cosmetic procedure] hasn't been thought through properly."

The ASPS also added that the teenagers’ view of cosmetic surgery is somewhat flawed. They use it as a way to fit in with the crowd, and they may not realize that it is indeed a serious and major operation.

Experts noted that peer pressure plays a crucial role in the emergence of the trend. Psychologist consultant Eileen Bradbury has this to say: "Peer pressure is a big issue. The main issue I will see is that other girls will have commented about their appearance. It's this competitiveness among your peers that is far more noticeable in adolescents than in adults."

The media and entertainment industry continue to showcase the idea that looking good is the fastest way to success and teens are facing such pressure everyday. It is then necessary to put their mindset into the right perspective and be guided accordingly.

  • Peer Pressure 24/7

I'll let you in on a little secret: peer pressure doesn't stop once you leave college. Our whole lives, we're pressured into doing things that we may or may not really want to do with our lives. Of course, younger people may be ill-equipped to handle this pressure, but the reality is, so are many adults. I work with a surgeon who performs breast augmentation in Columbia, Maryland and he takes the time to make sure the women he sees who are considering this procedure are making an informed choice. In general, rather than becoming a nanny state, I think we should do a better job of helping people of all ages make informed choices.
