White Caucasian: the standard of beauty

According to a Toronto star article, plastic surgeon Dr. Fred Stuker, who pioneered cosmetic surgery for African-Americans in the 70’s, said that because people of color are exposed and influenced by westernized beauty standards, they are heading to their plastic surgeons for rhinoplasty, eye widening and chin implants more than ever before.
"If you look now, there are a lot of black (models), but what do they look like?" he says.
"They look like the rest of the models, only their skin is darker. So those kinds of features that are thought to be attractive translate across all ethnic patterns."
Indeed, Stucker says bluntly: "I think the standard of beauty ...is white Caucasian."
Those of African background have a tendency to acquire very large noses with flaring nostrils, thus they undergo rhinoplasty to reduce them a little and make them less African. Asians, on the other hand, most likely would want to increase the sizes of their nose and reshape the upper eyelids to add folds.
So it looks like everybody is aching to look like Caucasians. Haven’t we learned anything from Michael Jackson? He tried so hard to look like a white American, even literally changing the color of his skin. But is he happy? Are we happy looking at his deformed face?
There is nothing wrong with improving the way you look. However, it is also important to consider various options of changing the current look. Instead of looking like somebody else, it would be best to really focus on enhancing the features without losing ethnicity. I think that’s practically the main principle that should be followed in dealing with patients of color.
